My Dad from my (He)Art...

My Dad from my (He)Art
Watercolors on Paper

The only question God can never answer for me: Why did you take my Dad from us that early?

You could only take my Dad from my life but not from my Heart. Just those couple of years that you had let me observe my Dad closely in my childhood are enough for me to follow him and carry with me, some of his very fine-skills that the world couldn't see. As long as I live, he lives with me in my Heart and in my Art.

Remembering my Dad, who is the first person I admire most in my life, ever and forever!
Happy Father's Day!

Happy Mother's Day...

Self with Mom - Watercolors on Paper
ఎంత మహా ఘనుడైనా
అమ్మ ఒడీ పసివాడే...

Being away from my Mom almost all through my life, what else can be a better way for me to celebrate Mother's day than doing a portrait of "Self with Mom". This is based on a picture taken with my family when I was 1 year old. I just took out my-self and my Mom from it into this painting.

If at all there is anything I owe to anybody in this life, it's to my Mom & my Baamma. They are the two people who sacrificed everything that they could, without both of them I wouldn't be what I am today. Mom's Love is the only love that's pure!

"All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother." - Abraham Lincoln

Happy Mother's Day! Happy Painting!!

Seize the moment...

The Duo with Arrows - My Tribute to Excellence
Based on a still from the
Telugu movie Bahubali-2 The Conclusion

To live life to full potential, one has to Seize, most, if not all moments that the life offers. The moments could be of pride, joy, achievement, any such which when recalled would only enhance it by making us feel better.

I seize one such moment that I experienced on the Silver Screen last weekend in the form of a Telugu Movie: Bahubali-2 The Conclusion in my Painting as my tribute to the excellence by the Team of this Movie. This is a movie very well narrated in all aspects on the Silver Screen. My favorite scene in this movie of all is an amazingly executed fight with Arrows. It's not just the fight, but the way it was done to establish the characters of the Hero and the Heroine. Excellent performance by Prabhas and Anushka. It was just Brilliant. Kudos to Director Rajamouli Garu, all Actors and the whole unit!

This Painting started as a quick ink sketch but ended up as a Painting by itself on basic watercolor paper only of size 9" x 12". But to fully seize it into my Art, a bigger Painting on a professional quality paper is due from me for this "Perfect Duo with Three Arrows" ;)

Get inspiration from anything around you & just give your best in life and seize as many moments as you can!
Happy painting!

Tribute to one of the great souls of India...

Portrait of Jayalalitha
My tribute to one of the great souls of India.

When touching just one heart in life isn't possible for many souls, people who touch millions of hearts and sadden their day when they leave the world are truly great souls.

I pay my tribute to this great soul of India: Puratchi Thlaivi Jayalalitha.

Art is Autobiographical...

The Telugu Legendary Actor N.T. Rama Rao as Krishna
from the Telugu Movie: "Dana Veera Soora Karna"
We miss many things in life. Some- we don't miss at certain time, but later wish to go back in time to experience it again. Those are the ones that we feel like we missed forever. Some- we don't get a change to do at that time in life, but always love to do. These are the ones that get added to our wish-list. The wish-list keeps growing with us.

Childhood memories are sweetest of all. One of my childhood memories that I recollect very often was my joyful experience of watching the movie- Dana Veera Soora Karna with my Dad & my Brother. Also, the movie posters designed by Artist Gangadhar are still fresh in my memories. I used to simply stare at those posters by observing the finest Art work went into the poster designs. Thus it got added to my wish-list in my childhood. I am happy to do this portrait of Legendary Telugu actor Sri. N.T. Rama Rao from the movie Dana Veera Soora Karna. Just by doing it, I took my-self back into my own childhood ;)

All Artists take their interests that are near to their heart into their Art. Over a period of time, the works of an Artist become his/her own autobiography.

"All art is autobiographical; the pearl is the oyster's autobiography." - Federico Dellini, Film director and Writer (2- Jan 1920-1993)

Happy Painting! Enjoy Art!!

My Art Teacher who taught me how to draw...

With the beautiful Painting of Goddess Saraswathi by
my Art Teacher done on a wall in my school.

Though my Dad and my uncle Jaladanki Sudhakar were two persons whose Art works I observed very closely in my childhood before I left home at the age of 9 years to Gurukula Vidyalayam, there was another person whose Art works I observed even more closer, admired more and in fact learned Art from him as one of his students. My Art Teacher from my high-school, A.P. Residential School, Kodigenahalli, Sri. M. Venkateswara Rao was my first-and-the-only Art Teacher in my life.

We used to have just one 45-minute "Art Period" every week in our school from 5th to 9th grade. Those five years, I was probably one of the two or three students in my class of 36 students who used to look forward for that one Art period, week after week.

The special Art notebook that we used to carry to our Art period which was at least two times the size of a regular subject notebook with just about 20 pages or so to fill-in with Art for the full school-year. I saved some of my Art works I did in my school days, but couldn't save any of pages from my Art subject notebook as at the end of the school-year, we had to return all our notebooks to the school.

Many of our school Art periods are still very fresh in my memory including the very small room next to our 5th class dormitory which used to be our Art teacher's room initially. The outer-side wall of that room had three beautiful Paintings with wonderful messages, 1) Goddess Saraswathi Devi with the slokam "yakundendu thusharahaara dhavalaayaa subhra vsthraamitha..." 2) Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, India with some of his finest words, and 3) Rabindranath Tagore with his poem, "Where the mind is without fear...". All those beautiful paintings were done by our Art Teacher. Even after 30+ years those paintings are still there on the wall.

Also, the new and big Auditorium never fades out in my memory, in which my Art Teacher had his room at one corner with a small wall-window, in my later years at our school. He used to have a small watercolor painting of Saraswathi in a simple frame on his table. Whenever I used to go there, my eyes and heart just used to stare at that beautiful painting. That small painting got a photo-print in my memory. When I try to recollect it from my memory, it often comes out as the most beautiful painting I have ever seen and admired since my school days. I am still trying to extract it out from my memory so that I can try to reproduce it, as close to it as I can, in coming years to pay my respects to my Teacher.

One of the best things happened in my life recently was our first-ever school reunion in Dallas, US. I met many of our schoolmates, seniors, juniors and one of our teachers there. One of my seniors brought his school autograph book and showed the autograph from our Art Teacher. His Autograph was nothing but a very beautiful sketch in that book of small size: 3"x4". I was so happy to see the sketch and immediately took a picture of it- a quick sketch as his autograph on one page and his hand-writing on the other page. I am so glad that I took pictures of those two pages.

God plans few things for us upon hearing our prayers and delivers those to us at appropriate times in life. I believe, the God certainly delivered those two pages to me on that occasion.

Here are the two pages:

My Art Teacher's quick sketch from
one of my senior's autograph book
My Art Teacher's hand-writing
I was also so happy to call my Teacher's son after our school reunion event, who was also a student of our school and was a junior to me. With so much of joy which is hard to express in words, I did talk with my Teacher, 3 decades after graduating from the school. I shared my Art Blog with my Teacher. Later, his son shared with me, what my Teacher said after looking at some of my paintings..."Giri drew better than me". I do not consider that I drew better than my Teacher in anyway, but take it as- the best blessings that my Art ever received. Also, that is the best compliment a student can get from his Teacher.

A couple my Teacher's paintings I collected from his Son:

One of my Art Teacher's Paintings
An Oil Painting by my Art Teacher
on a wall at his home

Some of my Teacher's Art works from memories of my school days:

  • Paintings on walls of several buildings around the school campus
  • Many good quotations in Telugu and English that were painted on the back walls many of our  classrooms.
  • The sketches that he used to prepare with help of few selected students for Science Fair Projects.
  • The stencil of our school name he made and used to print on our t-shirts for our Grigs: district-level Games & Sports we used to participate representing our school.
  • Sculpture on Soaps. Especially, the Taj Mahal on Pears soap, the only transparent bath soap available those days, placed in a see through box made out of audio cassette plastic box with an  added small light behind it. A marvelous piece of Art. (I attempted this feat of sculpture on soaps at least three times so far, and I wish I could do more of it.)
  • Our class-room black boards with white letters painted on the top left corner.

Art always touches hearts and lives longer. I hope to see and collect some more of my Art Teacher's works in future.

With great respects, I say- "Thank you Sir, for teaching me Art" and I also thank God for all these great memories of Art.

Drawing like a Painting...

Portrait of Bhanupriya - Ballpoint Pen on Paper
I heard some Artists saying- don't paint like a drawing. That's true! When you are painting, don't paint like a drawing. But, what if I am drawing and I want to draw like a painting? That's an interesting thought and exactly what I questioned myself before I started drawing this.

In Painting, there is always a set of colors to choose from and different values of single color to get the composition and all the shades desired. The surface chosen to Paint also helps and plays an important role along the way. In drawing, you don't have all that luxury of choices and help. Typically, all you have is the surface and one medium like pencil, ink, charcoal etc that you choose. Of course, each medium comes with it's own challenges. All you depend on is, just your own skill.

Painting doesn't require accuracy, but drawing does.

In Art, in my opinion, there are no boundaries, and no hard and fast rules. Just go with no rules and boundaries and do you what you enjoy doing. When you enjoy and love what you do, nothing else matters much!

Happy Drawing and Happy Painting!

Here is a snapshot of work in progress:

When Art meets Art...

Ganga Kuchipudi Dance with Ganga Art backdrop
Yesterday evening was a memorable experience for me watching the Magnificent Kuchipui Dance Ballet Tripaadi Ganga choreographed, directed and performed by Sailaja Tummala garu with her dance school students at the Collins Center for Performing Arts, Andover, MA organized by World Hindu Council of America (VHPA) and Sri Kuchipudi Natyalaya.

It was a delighting experience seeing my Art as the backdrop on the stage during this two-and-half-hour long wonderful ballet on the concept of different forms of Ganga - Sweeya, Parakeeya and Saamaanya, beautifully narrated and depicted on the stage through Kuchipudi Dance.

Following are the three sketches done for introducing those three forms:

Sweeya - A woman who loves, marries and lives with one for life
Parakeeya - Marries one but loves another
Saamaanya - One who can be with many
Indian Classical Dance has been one of the subjects that I have been doing series of paintings in both Watercolors and Oil colors. I admire this divine form of Art so much and always get inspired by it. I am truly honored to get this opportunity to do few sketches for this beautiful Kuchipudi Dance Ballet that depicted Ganga in three forms from 1) Born for Lord Shiva (Sweeya) to 2) Living with King Shantanu (Parakeeya) due to Bramha's Curse and 3) Reaching millions of people in India now who live and depend on it's water for daily living.

Many Thanks to Sailaja garu for giving me this opportunity and I was humbled by her words when she mentioned my name and my Art at the end of the show. Not only a wonderful Kuchipudi dancer, she is very inspirational speaker. I am also thankful to Radha Jaldu for introducing me and my Art to Sailaja garu. I am even more inspired now.

It was an evening very well spent and I cherish all those moments and the wonderful experience forever.

What dreams may (be)come true...

A tribute to my Dad

A tribute to my Dad...

Lord Rama and Sita by my Dad
I grew up observing closely my Dad's wonderful Indian Ink Drawing of Lord Rama and Sita. This is the drawing that I stared at most in my life.

Later I tried the same with Ballpoint pen and changed it to Radha and Krishna. Doing a full-blown Painting of the same has been in my dream list for a very long time. I finally attempted to make my dreams (be)come true...

Going BIG...

I never tried this big size Painting. Very first time, I tried 22" x 30" (56 cm x 76 cm) watercolor painting. That is big for a painting like this in watercolor. I spent many hours and in fact probably the longest time of all in recent years. Though I started this last week, I struggled today along the way to get it done. More than anything, my struggle was with both faces to get that pleasant look, as close to as pleasant they look in my Dad's work...I know, I couldn't quite get there for obvious reasons :(

At least, I am happy I made a bold attempt. If I had waited further, the time would never have come!

This is my TRIBUTE in many respects...

Never give up with the God's given gift in life. That is the only way to pay respect to God.

Happy Painting!

Nātyānjali-7: Indian Classical Dance...

Nātyānjali - Portrait of Kamal Haasan from the
Telugu movie Sagara Sangamam
The series of my paintings on the subject of "Indian classical Dance" will only be incomplete without at least one painting based on the movie Sagara Sangamam - one of greatest Indian movies of all time on the same subject.

This is the movie that inspires me on any given day. The Classical Dancer role played by Kamal Haasan - the most versatile and multi-talented actor of Indian Cinema, is heart-touchingly designed and directed by director Sri K.Viswanath.

As the movie inspires me every single time I watch it, I am happy, now this painting doubles that inspiration every time when I look at it.

In the climax of this movie, as it is rightly ends by saying- THERE IS NO END TO ART!

Keep Getting Inspired and Keep Painting!

Happy Republic Day - INDIA...

Obama - Modi
Happy Republic Day INDIA!

As India celebrates it's 66th Republic Day today, the entire world turns and looks at India. The US President Mr. Barack Obama is attending this celebrations as the Chief Guest with the First Lady Michelle Obama and making it even a historic celebrations.

When I came to US, to my surprise, few even asked me where exactly India was on the earth. Since then India emerged as one of the strong countries on the earth. I am hoping the country reaches new heights under the leadership of Mr. Narendra Modi.

All the best to India and Happy Republic Day to all Indians!

I am glad I took time to record this historic day in my Art.

Happy painting ;)

Inspiration comes from anywhere...

Bahubali - Avanthika
Inspiration comes from anywhere and lies everywhere. I wasn't even thinking of starting a new Painting when I woke up last Sunday. But the moment I saw the picture of Tamannah posted on Facebook by Bahubali's team, the movie that our great Telugu Film Director Rajamouli Garu is directing. It instantly inspired me, pulled me into Painting and made my Sunday.

Like many, I have been waiting for this movie which is going to be a visually stunning and a real feast to artistic eyes. I wish Good luck to Bahubali team!

Inspired by a great movie that hundreds of Artists are working together, I am happy to end this year with this painting. As with every Painting, I enjoyed doing this one.

Happy New Year & Happy Painting!

Bruce Lee - The Legend of Martial Arts...

Bruce Lee - The Legend of Martial Arts
Portraits of Legendary Personalities - yet another subject for my paintings that I always have been dreaming to start. Though I did few drawings of some prominent personalities in the past, I haven't done any big paintings. I am glad that, "Bruce Lee - A True Legend of Martial Arts" happened to be the first in this series.

A video shared by one of my friends recently on Facebook inspired me to start Bruce Lee's portrait and also this series of Legendary Personalities. It was just a coincidence that I started this painting yesterday, Nov 27 which also happened to be Bruce Lee's birthday.

Bruce Lee, probably is the single most person known to many humans on the earth than anybody in the human history. It's always refreshing recollecting my school-days with Bruce Lee on some of my class notebooks.

Happy holidays & Happy Painting ;)
