Friends forever

Oil Painting requires patience, at every phase of it. It's more like cooking. If you do not have patience in cooking, you turn out to be a bad cook and most likely remain a bad cook for your life. If you only enjoy cooking, but not cutting vegetables before and cleaning dishes after, you are still not a good cook. A good cook needs patience at all phases and must enjoy the complete process of cooking. Similarly, Oil Painting requires quite a bit of setup before you get to touch the canvas with brush. At the end, cleaning brushes & palette is a real test to your patience. I have heard Artists saying- "I hate cleaning brushes". Well, if you hate cleaning brushes, you are not enjoying the process fully ;)

Like many beginners in Oil Painting, I went through the struggles of cleaning palette and brushes. With not knowing techniques, I spoiled expensive brushes and palettes. I also tried disposable wax-coated papers and plastic palettes, and was not happy with either. I do have a couple of wooden palettes, but am scared to touch those as I do not know how to clean dried-up painting on wood. Recently, after watching a youtube video, I made my own palette from a glass, removed from an old frame. I even spent my time quoting one side with gray acrylic paint and adding a thin border all around with duct tape. This one worked out to my best satisfaction and I am quite happy. Cleaning is as easy as scrapping the paint. Of course, I had to visit hardware stores finding a good paint scrapper. Don't try to scrape any other way, nothing works better than a good paint scrapper ;)

You have to learn by experimenting in order to arrive at what works best for you. It's a scientifically proven fact, that the best option is always the last one. To arrive at it, you will have to try all other options. Life is meant to work that way only. If it works any different for anybody, that person is an extraordinary person ;)

After experiencing and knowing what I want, I've decided to invest my money & time to buy expensive palette. This new New Wave Posh Tabletop Palette with corner guards and gray-coated on one side, is my new friend I have now in my journey of Oil Painting.

It's a false belief that only people have hearts. Non-living things do have hearts; only if you can feel. Unlike living people, non-livings do not hurt. All they need is little care, they always give their best to you.

My dear new friends, new palette and brushes, I promise to give you a good care. Let's start our colorful journey on the path of Oil Painting, and make it a memorable journey together...

శ్రీ చెల్వ పిళ్ళ బుక్ సెంటర్, ట్రంక్ రోడ్, కావలి...

కావలి "చెల్వపిళ్ళ" బుక్ షాపు, అప్పుడూ ఇప్పుడూ అదే లుక్కు 

చెల్వ పిళ్ళ - "కావలి" పట్టణంలో లో ఈ పేరు తెలీని వాళ్ళు చాలా కొద్ది మందే ఉంటారు. వుంటే గింటే ఆ కొద్ది మందీ ఎప్పుడూ పుస్తకమో పెన్నో పట్టని వాళ్ళై ఉంటారు.

1976 లో నాన్న ఉద్యోగరీత్యా కావలి పట్టణాని కి తరలి వచ్చిన కొత్తల్లో గోపాల్రావు సార్, పద్మావతి మేడమ్ ల బడి "విద్యాభారతి(పేరుకు తగ్గట్టు నిజంగానే ఎందరో కావలి విద్యార్ధుల్ని తీర్చిదిద్దిన సరస్వతి నిజ స్వరూపం)" లో శేషమ్మ అయ్యవారమ్మ క్లాస్ లో అన్ని పరీక్షల్లోనూ ఫస్ట్ మార్కుల్తో రోజూ "రీము"ల కొద్దీ పేపర్ల పై పరీక్షలు రాసే రోజుల్లో నాకూ చెల్వపిళ్ళ అంటే బొత్తిగా తెలీదు. ఎందుకంటే పెన్నూ, పేపరూ వగైరాలన్నీ నాన్న, అమ్మే చూసుకునే (చూసి కొనే) వారు. ఆ తర్వాతి సంవత్సరంలోనే తాలూకా, జిల్లా లెవెల్ లో జరిగిన రెండు పోటీ పరీక్షల్లోనూ నేను నెగ్గటం, నెగ్గిన వెంటనే "ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ గురుకుల విద్యాలయం, కొడిగెనహళ్ళి, హిందూపురం, అనంతపురం జిల్లా" అనే మారుమూల సుదూర ప్రాంతానికి కి ఓ చిన్న సూట్కేస్ లో నా చిన్ని ప్రపంచాన్నంతా నీట్ గా మడతలు పెట్టి, అక్కడ నా కాట్ నాకే ఉంటుందనీ, నా అన్నం గిన్నె నేనే కడుక్కోవాలనీ, పుస్తకాలూ, బట్టలూ, వస్తువులన్నీ ఎప్పుడూ నీట్ గా జాగ్రత్తగా సర్ది పెట్టుకోవాలనీ, అన్నం మెత్తగా అయితే తినకుండా ఉండొద్దనీ, ఒకవేళ మెత్తగా అయినా తినే అలవాటు చేసుకోవాలనీ, రోజూ శుభ్రంగా స్నానం చేసి కొబ్బరినూనె పెట్టుకుని తల దువ్వుకుని పౌడర్ రాసుకోవాలనీ, ఇంటిమీద దిగులు పెట్టుకోకూడదనీ... ఇంకా ఎన్నెన్నో జాగ్రత్తలు నేర్పించి మరీ నన్ను పంపించిన నాన్న, తొమ్మిదేళ్ళ తెలిసీ తెలియని వయసులో చేరేది ఐదవ తరగతే అయినా అదేదో కలక్టర్ కోర్స్ లో చేరుతున్నంత సంబరంతో ఎరుగుకుంటూ వెళ్ళిన నేనూ...ఆ వెను వెంటనే అందర్నీ కాకున్నా, నన్నొక్కడ్నీ లైఫ్ లో అప్పుడే సెటిల్ చేసేసి ఏదో అర్జంట్ పని ఉందంటూ మా జీవితాల్లో పెనుతుఫాను సృష్టించి నాన్న ని దేవుడు తనతో తీసుకెళ్ళి పోవటం అన్నీ చక చకా జరిగి పోవటంతో, ఆ తర్వాత శలవులకి వచ్చినప్పుడల్లా నా పెన్నూ, నా పుస్తకం నాకన్నా ఒక్క సంవత్సరమే పెద్ద అయిన అన్న సాయంతో నేనే చూసుకోవాల్సిన టైమ్ పదకొండేళ్ళ ప్రాయంలోనే ముంచుకొచ్చేసింది. మొదటిసారెపుడెళ్ళానో సరిగా గుర్తులేకున్నా అప్పుడే బహుశా ఎప్పుడోకప్పుడు "చెల్వ పిళ్ళ" కి ఏ పెన్నో, పెన్సిలో, రబ్బరో కొనుక్కోటానికనెళ్ళుంటా.

తర్వాత పరీక్షలు రాసేసి శలవులకి వచ్చినప్పుడల్లా కావలి లో మేముండే పెంకుటింట్లో కుర్చీ లో కూర్చునో, మరీ ఏండ ఎక్కువైతే పైన కూర్చుంటే తలకి తగిలే నారాయణవ్వ తాటాకుల వసారాలో చల్లని నాపరాయి అరుగు మీద కూర్చునో, లేదా అక్కడే ఎప్పుడూ ఎత్తి పెట్టి ఉండే నులక మంచం వాల్చుకుని దానిపైన  కూర్చునో గంటల కొద్దీ బొమ్మలేసుకుంటూ నాకంటూ ఓ బొమ్మల లోకం మెల్లిగా రూపుదిద్దుకోసాగింది. పోను పోనూ నా బొమ్మల నాణ్యత పెరుగుతూ నాసిరకం నోటు పుస్తకాల కాగితాలు దాటి అన్న "బయాలజీ" రికార్డుల్లో ఒకవైపు వాడగా రెండో వైపు ఖాళీగా ఉండే కొంచెం మందమైన పేపర్ ని కూడా ఎక్కి దాటేసి ఇంకాస్త మంచి పేపర్ పైకెక్కాలని చూస్తున్న రోజుల్లోనే ఒకసారి- "మంచి డ్రాయింగ్ పేపర్ కావాలండీ" అంటూ చెల్వపిళ్ళ షాప్ కెళ్ళిన ఆరోజింకా గుర్తే. ఆ షాపు ఓనర్ ఎంతో నెమ్మదస్తుడు.

"ఇదుగో బాబూ...ఇది చూడు బాబూ...ఇదుగో ఇదీ...మరిదీ..." అంటూ ఎన్ని చూపెట్టినా నచ్చని నేను చివరికి
"మా పెద్దమామయ్య ప్రింటింగ్ ప్రెస్ లో ఒకటి చూశా అండీ...అలాంటిది కావాలి" అంటే
"ప్రింటింగ్ ప్రెస్ లోనా, దేనికి వాడ్తారదీ"
"పెళ్ళి కార్డులకి...తిక్ గా... చాలా తెల్లగా ఉంటుంది"
"ఓ అదా...దాన్ని ఐవరీ బోర్డ్ అంటారు బాబూ, చాలా మంచి పేపర్"  అంటూ లోపల్నుంచి ఓ పేపర్ చుట్ట తెచ్చి అందులోంచి ఓ షీట్ తీసి బల్లపై పరిస్తే, ఆ బల్లంత వెడల్పాటి ఆ పేపర్ చూసి విప్పారిన నా మొహం...
"ఆ ఇదేనండీ" అంటూ కొని ఆనందంగా ఇంటికెళ్ళిన నాకు ఆరోజే ఎందుకో నాకా షాప్ ఓనర్ పైన భలే గురి కుదిరిపోయింది. ఇంకెప్పుడు ఏ డ్రాయింగ్ మెటీరియల్ కావాలన్నా వెళ్ళిపోయి ఆయన్నడిగి అన్నీ కొనుక్కుని తెచ్చుకుని నా లోకంలోకెళ్ళిపోయే వాడిని.

ఇంకాస్త పెద్దయ్యాక ఇంజనీరింగ్ చేసే రోజుల్లో డ్రాయింగ్ దాటి "పెయింటింగ్" పైకెళ్ళిపోయింది మనసు. విజయవాడ లో పటమట లోని ఎన్ని బుక్ షాపుల్లో అడిగినా దొరకని వాటర్ కలర్ రంగులు, ఎట్టా అని దిగులు పెట్టేసుకున్న మనసూ...

మళ్ళీ శలవులకి ఇంటికి వ్చచ్చినప్పుడు మన "చెల్వపిళ్ళ" కెళ్ళి "వాటర్ కలర్స్ ఉన్నాయాండీ" అంటూ నిలబడితే "బిళ్ళలు, బాటిల్స్ ఈ రెండిట్లో ఏది కావాలో చూడు"  అంటూ ఒక బిళ్ళల పెట్టె, చిన్న క్యామెల్ పోస్టర్ కలర్స్ బాటిల్స్ (6 కలర్స్) సెట్టూ తెచ్చి నా ముందు పెట్టిన ఆ షాప్ ఓనర్ ఆ సమయంలో సరిగ్గా...ఎంతో కాలం గా తపస్సు చేస్తే ప్రత్యక్షమై "ఏం వరం కావాలి కోరుకో భక్తా!" అంటే "మంచి వాటర్ కలర్స్ సెట్ కావాలి, స్వామీ" అనగానే తథాస్తు అంటూ చేతిలో పెట్టే దేవుడి లా కనిపించాడు. తర్వాత నేను ఇండియా లో ఉన్నంత కాలం ఆ షాపూ, ఆ షాపు ఓనరూ నా బొమ్మల లోకానికి ఎంతో దగ్గరయ్యారు. ఆయన చేతులమీదుగా ఆ షాప్ లో కొన్న పేపర్ లూ, కొన్ని క్యామెల్ వాటర్ కలర్సూ, కొద్దిగంటే కొద్దిగానే అక్కడే దొరికిన బ్రష్ లూ వీటితో ఎన్ని బొమ్మలు వేసుకున్నానో...అన్నీ పదిలంగా దాచుకుని నాతో US కీ తెచ్చుకున్నాను.

పదిహేనేళ్ళ క్రితం కావలి నుండి అమ్మ వాళ్ళు నెల్లూరు కెళ్ళిపోవటం, నేనూ ఇండియా వెళ్ళినప్పుడు అప్పుడప్పుడూ కావలికి వెళ్ళినా ఆ షాప్ కి వెళ్ళలేకపోవటం చాలా కాలం గా నా జీవితం లో కొరతగానే ఉండిపోయింది.

అనుకోకుండా ఈ మధ్య పెళ్ళికి నెల్లూరు వెళ్ళటం, పెళ్ళికి ముందు "మ్యూజికల్ నైట్" కావలిలో పెట్టుకోటం, ఆ హోటల్ "చెల్వపిళ్ళ" షాపుకి దగ్గరే కావటం, నేను ఆరోజు ఆ ఫంక్షన్ కి వెళ్తే ఇంకా అందరూ రావటానికి కాస్త టైమ్ ఉండటం, ఆ కాస్త సమయంలో "చెల్వపిళ్ళ" షాప్ చూడాలని నా మనస తహ తహలాడటం తో, ఒక్కడినే నడుచుకుంటూ ఆ షాప్ చూడాలని బయల్దేరా.

వెళ్తుంటే..."షాప్ ఇంకా ఉంటుందా? ఉంటే ఎలా ఉంటుందీ? ఆ ఓనర్ ఇంకా ఉంటాడా? లేదా ఆయన పిల్లలు షాప్ నడుపుతుంటారా?" ఇలా రకరకాలుగా ప్రశ్నించే నా మది...ఏదో తెలీని ఫీలింగ్ తో  ఆ షాపు చేరిన నాకు, అప్పటిలానే ఎప్పుడూ నలుగురైదుగురితోనే కిటకిటలాడే అదే షాపూ(బయట నలుగురైదుగురికన్నా ముందు వరసలో పట్టరు), అందరికీ ఎంతో ఓపిగ్గా అడిగినవి లోపలి నుంచి ఒకరిద్దరు అక్కడ పనిచేసే అబ్బాయిల్తో తెప్పించి ఇచ్చే అదే షాపు ఓనరూ కనిపించటంతో భావోద్వేగాల్లో మునిగిన నా మనసు...

ఇది కలా నిజమా అనుకుంటూ ఒక పక్కగా నిలబడ్డ నన్ను చూసి ఆ ఓనర్ "మీకేం కావాలీ" అనగానే "వాళ్ళకేం కావాలో చూడండి, నాకు కొంచెం మీ టైమ్ కావాలి" అని కొంచెం రద్దీ తగ్గాక దగ్గరికెళ్ళి నవ్వుతూ నావైపుకేసి చూసిన ఆ ఓనర్ తో...
"ముప్పై ఏళ్ళ క్రితం రెగ్యులర్ గా మీ షాప్ లో డ్రాయింగ్ మెటీరియల్ కొంటుండే వాడిని. మళ్ళీ చాలా కాలానికి ఇటువైపు వచ్చాను. నాకు మీ చేతుల మీదుగా ఒక మంచి పెన్ను కావాలండీ, అది మీ చేత్తో మీరే తీసి నాకివ్వాలి" అన్నా.
వెంటనే "తప్పకుండా, మీరిప్పుడెక్కడుంటారు సార్" అంటూ ఎంతో వినయం గా ప్రశ్న.
"అయ్యో నన్ను సార్ అనకండి, బాబూ అంటే చాలు, నేనిప్పుడు US లో ఉంటానండీ"
"అనుకోకుండా ఇటొచ్చాను, మిమ్మల్నీ మీ షాపు నీ చూడాలనే కోరికతో ఇక్కడికొచ్చా, మీరు అప్పుడెలా ఉన్నారో ఇప్పుడూ అదే చిరునవ్వు, అంతే వినయం అలానే ఉన్నారు. ఏం మారలేదు. అప్పట్లో యంగ్ గా ఉండేవారు, ఇప్పుడు పెద్దవాళ్ళయి పోయారు."
మళ్ళీ వినయంతో కూడిన చిరునవ్వే సమాధానం.
ఇంతలో ఆ పక్కనే ఉన్న ఒకాయన, "మీరు ముప్పై ఏళ్ళ క్రితమే, నేనాయన్ని నలభై ఐదేళ్ళుగా ఎరుగుదును, ఆయన అప్పుడూ ఇప్పుడూ అలానే ఉన్నారు" అనగా మళ్ళీ అటువైపునుంచి చిరునవ్వే.
"అవునండీ ఆయనేం మారలేదు" అని నేను...
"అప్పుడు రేనాల్డ్స్ పెన్ను ఎక్కువగా మీదగ్గర కొనే వాడిని, ఇప్పుడు ఏం ఉన్నాయో తెలీదు మీరే చూసి మంచి పెన్ను ఇవ్వండి" అన్నా.
"అలాగే, మంచి పెన్నే ఇస్తానండీ" అంటూ ఒక చిన్న ప్యాక్ లోంచి ఓ పెన్ను తీసి, దాని క్యాప్ తీసి, ఓ పేపర్ పైన "శ్రీ రామ జయం" అని రాసి టెస్ట్ చేసి మరీ నా చేతికిస్తుంటే...
"చాలా సంతోషం అండీ" మీ చేత్తో రాసిన ఆ "శ్రీ రామ జయం" ఫొటో తీసుకుంటాను.
"అలాగే అండీ, అందిరికీ అయనే కదండీ ఎప్పుడూ రక్ష" అని నవ్వుతూ ఆయన...
"మీకు అభ్యంతరం లేకపోతే మిమ్మల్నీ ఒక ఫొటో తీసుకుంటానండీ, గుర్తుగా" అన్నా.
"అలాగే" అంటూ (వయసు పైబడి, కొద్దిగా వంగిన భుజంతో ఎంతో వినయంగా నవ్వుతూ) నిలబడ్డ ఆయన్ని ఫొటో తీసుకుని...
"అలాగే మీ చేత్తో ఒక మంచి పెన్సిల్ కూడా కావాలండీ" అన్నా.
"తప్పకుండా అండీ" అంటూ ఆయన వెనక్కి తిరిగి పెన్సిల్ తీస్తుంటే....
"అప్పుడు అప్సర, నటరాజ్ అని రెండు పెన్సిల్స్ ఉండేవి, బ్లూ రెడ్ కలర్స్ లో" అన్నా.
"ఇప్పుడూ అవే ఉన్నాయండీ, అవే మంచి క్వాలిటీ కూడా. అయితే వేరే రంగులో వస్తున్నాయి" అంటూ ఒక పెన్సిల్ కూడా తీసిచ్చిన ఆయన చేతుల మీదుగా అవి తీసుకున్న ఆ మధుర క్షణాలు ఎప్పటికీ నా మదిలో పదిలం!

"మీ పేరు అప్పుడు నాకు తెలీదండీ, తెలుసుకునే ప్రయత్నం ఎప్పుడూ చెయ్యలేదు, ఇప్పుడు తెలుసుకోవాలనుంది" అన్నా.
"లక్ష్మీ నారాయణ అండీ" అంటూ ఎంతో వినయమైన మాట.

"మళ్ళీ ఇన్నిరోజుల తర్వాత మీ చేతుల మీదుగా ఒక పెన్, ఒక పెన్సిల్ తీసుకోవటం ఎంతో సంతోషంగా ఉందండీ, మీరెప్పటికీ సంతోషంగా ఉండాలని కోరుకుంటాను, ఉంటానండీ" అన్నా.
"తప్పకుండానండీ" అంటూ నవ్వుతూ నిలబడ్డ ఆయన ముఖం లోని ఆ నవ్వు తృప్తిగా చూసుకుని ఆనందంగా బయల్దేరిన నా మది నాతో...

"చాలా సంతోషం రా, ఇంత కాలానికి నీ కోరిక తీరింది. కాలంతోపాటు ఎంతో మారిపోయిన ఈ ప్రపంచంలో మారని నీ మనసే కాదు, చెల్వపిళ్ళ ఓనరూ, అదే ఆ లక్ష్మీ నారాయణ గారూ, ఇదే నీ చిన్నప్పటి కావలి లో అలానే ఉన్నారు, ధన్యం" అని లోపల అంటుంటే తృప్తిగా ఫంక్షన్ హాల్ వైపు నడిచిన ఆ మధురక్షాణాల్నీ, ఆ సాయంత్రాన్నీ ఎప్పటికీ నా మదిలో పదిలం గా దాచుకుంటాను...

"చెల్వపిళ్ళ లక్ష్మీ నారాయణ గారు" పది కాలాలపాటు చల్లగా ఉండాలని కోరుకుంటూ, ఆయన చేతుల్తో ఇచ్చిన డ్రాయింగ్ మెటీరీయల్ తో రూపుదిద్దుకున్న నా చిన్ననాటి బొమ్మలూ, నేనూ ఎప్పటికీ ఆ(యన) వినయానికీ, ఆ చిరునవ్వుకీ కట్టుబడే ఉంటాం.

"మారిన కాలంతో మనుషులు మారిపోయినా, దూరమైపోయినా, వేరైపోయినా, వారు మిగిల్చిన జ్ఞాపకాల్ని గుర్తు చేసుకుంటూ జీవించే మనసులు మానవత్వానికి ప్రతిరూపాలు" - గిరిధర్ పొట్టేపాళెం

Time to clean up that mess...

Artists' palettes usually look very messy. I myself often wonder how such messy surface can be the base for creating beautiful and wonderful paintings. Believe it or not, some Artists never clean their palettes ;)

I took a break from my watercolor painting to experience Painting in Oils last summer. Just opened my palette today to see what kind of mess I had left on it after my last watercolor painting. All of the color-slots have pretty dry paint left and the mixing areas and large wells for washes  all got dried-up. Before I clean this mess, I thought I'd rather take a snapshot of it, which when I look back reminds me, two years of wonderful journey into my dream of watercolor painting.

Now, it's time to clean up that mess and start a new journey from here again. Looking forward to fantastic experiences again after this break.

Creation is always a messy process, but the outcome of a creation is always wonderful.

Don't be afraid to get into messy things when you are trying to create anything that is wonderful and beautiful!

Art Taking Part in BigHelp Annual Event - 2016...

BigHelp 2016 - Stage Decoration

A quick brainstorming of two Artists, one hour conference call with BigHelp committee, more than 10 hours of paper-cutting & preparations and 3 hours of stage decoration, all these efforts together had set this year's BigHelp Annual Event's Stage with a simple but elegant look. Within the limited time, resources and BigHelp's theme with added simplicity, Radha Jaldu and I took this task of Stage Decoration and we were pleasingly satisfied with our efforts & the outcome.

Though I have been helping with Art Contest for last few years, this year, it was a very satisfying experience for me, sitting in the audience and enjoying the cultural programs with my heart filled with the feeling of- our Art Taking Part in BigHelp Annual Event.

It was an amazing satisfaction for taking our Art become part of this year's BigHelp Fundraising Annual Event for the noble cause of helping needy students. Not just the stage decoration, I also took part in helping with Judging the Art contest, Rangoli contest and Coloring contest.

I am happy to take my Art part of this event for a noble cause.

Thanks to BigHelp President & Chairman Mr.Chand Pasha Shaik and Boston Chapter President Mrs.Sandhya Bommaraju for their trust on our creativity and making us part of this wonderful event.

Also, thanks to all those helpers who helped us on the stage arranging each and every bird and making sure that we were getting the shape that we visualized.

I am excited to have these Art supplies bought with my first-ever-prize-money of winning an Art Competition conducted by TANA recently. This is a nice addition of Rembrandt Artists' Oil Paints and Daniel Smith Quinacridone Watercolors to my Art supplies.

My Art tools & supplies are my Best Friends. They make me learn, make me feel good, make me get better and better, make me feel proud, give me joy, forgive me if I do a mistake, and stay with me till the last drop of their life. They reciprocate the same care & love to me in the form of creating beautiful paintings. I can't wait for making my "Dreams come True" of doing some serious Oil Painting this summer.

The Jewelry of my Palette...

My Set of Winsor and Newton professional watercolors

After trying different Manufacturer's and various qualities of Watercolors, I started to fall in Love with Winsor & Newton Professional watercolors. The transparency is great. The colors are available in many shades. Professional Artists say that just the primary colors- Red, Blue and Yellow are enough. That is so true and any color shade is possible with these 3 primary colors. But it is good to have other shades added to the set.

I will add few more shades of Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolors to my set and I think with that I will be all set for many years of happy painting.

I also have tried and experienced different Manufacturer's and various types of Watercolor paper. I think I started to develop my own taste for the paper too.

Artist's Loft Watercolor Pad, 140 lb / 300 g/m2, 9 in x 12 in Cold press, 24 sheets

Bought at Michaels, not that expensive. I bought this for my daily watercolor painting. I am carrying this with me in my backpack to do pencil sketches on the train and do painting at home afterwards.

Canson Watercolor Aquarelle Cold press 140 lb / 300 G, 11 in x 14 in, 20 sheets

Bought from Blick Art online, little expensive. I wanted to try different watercolor papers and see which one I like most.

1 1/2 inch Flat wash brush

Realized that a brush like this needed for wetting the paper for doing any backgrounds. Very expensive one. Bought from Blick Art, online.

Also bought  a sheet of 300 lb Arches watercolor paper from Blick Art- This is supposed to be the kind of paper that all Artists say, there's nothing like this....yet to try and experience painting on this heavy weight paper surface...of course it is expensive too.

My New Pal(ette)...

I have a new Pal now that I am going to spend my holy hours with; My brand new Palette for Watercolors.

I never knew anything about setting up a palette, or even color wheel that (m)any Art Book explains in the very first chapter itself. I always used to squeeze some paints from the tubes that I wanted to use for my Painting and then used to mix them here and there on the Palette and start Painting. Lately, I learned that many professional Artists have their Palettes setup and loaded with colors in a particular order that they prefer.

I organized and loaded my Palette with colors, ordered in some way; at least, all warms together and cools together, if not the perfect order.

The following is the order I preferred:

TOP - Left to Right 

Grumbacher Academy Artist's - Light Red (English Red)
Rowney Georgian - Burnt Sienna
Winsor & Newton Series 1 - Raw Sienna
Grumbacher Academy - Cadmium Red
Winsor & Newton Cotman Series 1 - Cadmium Orange Hue
Grumbacher Academy - Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue
Winsor & Newton Cotman Series 1 - Sap Green
Winsor & Newton Cotman Series 1A - 654 (no name of this color on the tube; surprising ...)

I had no place for white, I stopped using white anyway after learning that the paper itself gives natural and better white for watercolors. Of course, also learned that there is no need for Black and hence Black has no place at all and I am not going to use it anyway.

So, is it right if I call it now - My perfect Palette?
Ha has...I don't know ;)
